The term heterochromia refers to a condition in which there is a difference in the coloration in the iris of the eye. Heterochromia not only occurs in human beings but certain breeds of cats and dogs too.

Heterochromia is mostly genetic, i.e., it may be caused due to certain hereditary diseases. But sometimes it may be acquired too through certain diseases like diabetes or glaucoma or some injury to the eye.

There are various kinds of heterochromia. Complete heterochromia occurs when the color of one iris is different from the other one. Sectoral heterochromia or partial heterochromia happens when only a certain part of the iris is different in color from its other remaining parts. Central heterochromia happens when the color of the inner ring of the iris is different from the color its outer area.

Doctors do not consider heterochromia as a serious health risk, and therefore no treatment is required for it.
